Some of the most remarkable healing experiences I have been privileged to facilitate or observe, have occurred while teaching Reiki classes. Reiki is a school of Universal Life Force Energy Healing, and not a religion. However, there are many spiritual aspects to energy healing. For example, clairvoyantly seeing energy leaking out of a foot while the client reports it feels cold. Using Reiki to restore heat, remove pain, and relieve anxiety. Or, a client feels a sudden pain in one knee, a release, and greater range of motion after Reiki, all while I transfer energy into the shoulders. Or, watching a dark, misty cloud, like the one Pigpen has in the Charlie Brown cartoons, melt away from around the chest of a person with respiratory disease, as it is replaced with a strong glow of white light, easing their breathing.

Most people have seen a martial artist break a stack of bricks or boards. Their physical hand only touches the outside of the stack, yet the energy affects layers beneath. With the intention of healing, an energy worker only touches the energy field or lightly touches the outside of the body of the recipient, yet the subtle energy can move through and affect the whole body, mind, and spirit, profoundly. 

What does energy healing feel like? I often use the analogy of what it feels like when your foot falls asleep but you don’t know it yet. The circulation of your blood has been cut off for a period of time, so too the circulation of your energy flow can be compromised without your being aware. Until, that is, when the blood flow or energy flow begins again. You may feel a flood of sensations like: tingling, itching, burning, cold, pain, tickling, pin pricks, numbness, pulsating, pounding, or even your heartbeat. You can feel the same sensations when receiving a Reiki treatment, as energy blocks dissolve, and relaxation, health, and power return.

Sometimes, we must first patch a bucket that has holes before we can fill it, and gently cleanse away cobwebs from the physical and non-physical bodies. Then the energy softly pouring into the body is contained, and shining, brightly-colored lights dance in the etheric body of the recipient. It is inspiring and humbling to see the energetic outline of Reiki Masters standing in a long line of support after a student has received an attunement. Sensing loving, spirit beings join in to support and guide students and teachers is so cool.

Most of the time our belief systems change incrementally, slowly, bit by bit. Beliefs can define us, liberate, or imprison us. We know that they drive our behavior and therefore the outcome of any endeavor. So, how do we know a thing is real and true? When you know someone is telling a lie, do you feel it in your gut, see their tells, hear their tone change? Do you believe you only know things with your mind, or do you honor body knowing, emotional intelligence, spidey sense? As an energy healer, my experience with seriously ill clients time and time again is that if I can shift them to feel slightly better, it is often the proof needed for them to believe they can get well and their mind opens to allow it.

One small, positive shift in pain cessation, a noticeable relaxation of stress, often proves they have the ability to get better. A change in feeling allows for a radical change in belief towards hope. If you feel better, no one can convince you your treatment didn’t work.

I had just started a job as an energy healer and massage therapist at a salon years ago, so my photo and biography were put in the local paper to introduce me to the community. The next day, I was called to the front desk phone to speak with a potential client. She said she liked the energy of my photo and wanted a massage from me. I asked how I could help and she began to cry as she said, “I can’t pass the peace of Christ in church because I can’t touch anyone’s hand, and it’s breaking my heart.” I thought for a moment and replied, “That’s brilliant. You know what will prove to yourself that you are healed, and the why doesn’t matter.”

So, after completing a questionnaire I created, and getting permission from her prescribing physician, I asked if she would be open to a treatment plan of 10 sessions. She had been in talk therapy for 25 years, wanted to experience a more spiritual approach, and agreed. I proceeded to give her 3 treatments each of hypnosis, off the body Reiki energy healing, and 3 massage therapy treatments. She achieved her goal, to receive a full body massage in 9 instead of 10 sessions. The next Sunday at church, she joyfully shook hands and passed the peace comfortably.
